Ways to beat the summer heat in Palm Desert

Desert living is not for everybody, but for those of us who call Palm Desert our home, it’s everything we could possibly want. Sunshine, scenery, wide open spaces, spectacular sunsets, it’s all here. But, as desert dwellers, we’re always looking for ways to beat the summer heat in Palm Desert. For those of you who are new to the area, we’d like to share our tips on how we do it!

Beating the heat in the Palm Desert summertime means having a little strategy.

Be an early riser

The coolest part of the day is in the early morning. If you have things to do outside, this is the time to do it. Plus, the desert is beautiful in the morning. It’s when the cactus flowers bloom and wildlife is active. Get all your outdoor chores done by 10am and you’re golden.

Draw your blinds during the daytime

Desert temperatures drop considerably at night. To maintain that coolness inside, keep your windows open to the cool breezes at night and draw blinds and curtains as soon as the sun rises to maintain that cool. Keeping your windows open just a crack will help to circulate the air inside during the day and may keep it up to 30 degrees cooler.

Stay out of the sun as much as possible

If you must walk downtown during the day, stay on the shady side of the street. If you can’t avoid it, at least turn your back to the sun as you won’t absorb quite as much of the sun’s rays.

Wear a hat

Most of your body’s heat is exchanged through the top of your head. Keeping your cranium cool will help to cool the rest of your body as well. Plus, it will shade your face from UV rays. You can’t avoid the sun completely, but you can protect yourself.

Park your car facing north

Aiming your car towards the north minimizes the sun’s impact. If you have a good shade for your windshield, do use it. It will protect your backside from your sizzling hot car seats.

Go shopping indoors

Shops and movie theaters are air-conditioned, so going from store to store, even if you’re just “window shopping”, is a good way to beat the summer heat in Palm Desert. You’ll find that a lot of other people do the same thing, so you won’t be alone.

Take the tram to Idyllwild

Taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up to Idyllwild is a great way to spend a hot summer day. It goes from the low desert floor all the way up to the top of the San Jacinto mountains where you’ll find the quaint mountain town of Idyllwild. It’s a sharp contrast to the desert, with its alpine peaks, cedars, and mountain streams. You’ll find plenty of hiking trails or if you prefer, you can stroll the town, have some lunch, take in a movie, or visit one of the many galleries and shops.

You see? there are plenty of ways to beat the summer heat in Palm Desert! Do you have any hot tips you’d like to share? We’d love to hear them. Drop by Fusion Workspaces for a tour and let us know how you do it.
