Faces of Palm Desert with Michael Skillern

One of the best parts of our community at Fusion Workplaces is getting to know our members... and employees! We enjoy being able to learn more about what everyone does not just on a professional level, but on a personal one as well. Michael Skillern recently joined our Palm Desert community as the General Manager of Fusion Workplaces. We hope you enjoy getting to learn more about Michael.

How did you get the name Michael?

Believe it or not, my parents only wanted to use the name Michael for a girl - if I was born a boy, my name would have been Nicholas.

There is a rich, family history behind the name Michael - my dad is a twin, and his twin brother’s name is Michael. They were both preemie babies and Michael passed away soon after he was born. Due to the unique nature of a female named Michael, my parents raised me to always be confident in the name - It is an honor to carry such a meaningful family name.

Where are you from?

To put it simply: Born in Cali, raised in Texas, and Boston Strong.

I was born in Chico, CA: Home of Sierra Nevada Brewery and Green Bay Packers Quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. After elementary school, my family and I moved to the foothills of San Antonio, Texas where I fell in love with the great state of Texas.

When I was 17, I travelled to the east coast where I attended Emerson College, right in the heart of Boston, MA. I lived on Commonwealth Ave. near Fenway park for almost 10 years. I met my “now-husband” in Boston and although he was born and raised on the east coast, we needed some more sunshine in our day-to-day life. He ended up getting a great job offer out here in Palm Desert, CA and we have lived here for the last 5 years. We are currently planting roots out here in the desert.

What did you do before joining the Fusion Workplace team?

I have been in the hospitality industry for over 15 years, all throughout the country. My background also consists of inside and outside sales. Most recently, I spent the last few years at Eureka Restaurant in Indian Wells, where I was a Senior Manager and Brand Ambassador, connecting the local community.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job has been creatively bringing our community together by providing a safe and constructive working environment. I think we all have faced struggles in adjusting to new work environments during the COVID-19 pandemic. I know when new members find us, it is like they are coming up for a breath of fresh air… they can get back to the work they love to do by having a productive place to conduct their business.

Where do you draw motivation from on a daily basis?

Bethany Hamilton – Professional surfer who lost her arm when she was a teenager due to a shark attack. She has overcome adversity, pushed forward to continue her professional surfing career, and is now an incredible wife and mother.

The 2003-2007 NBA Spurs Team – They won 3 championships in 5 years with nothing but hard work, practice, and trust in their coach and team members.

Vince Lombardi’s “Order of Important Things in Life” – God, Family, and the Green Bay Packers.

What is your favorite quote?

“When nothing seems to help, I go back and look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.” - Jacob Riis
